Here in Rochester, New York the seasonal changes can be quite dramatic. With a little preparation to your pond in the fall, you can enjoy the rewards in the winter months as well. The good news is that there really isn't much to do! When Acorn Landscaping installs a pond, we pay extremely close attention to detail. We only use very low maintenance materials so you can enjoy your water garden every month of the year. In the fall, if your pond is directly under a tree, cover it with netting. Otherwise, simply empty the skimmer regularly. You should also cut back the plants in the pond just as you would your hostas and other perennials outside the pond. Keep it running all winter long! We use big enough pumps so that ice damning is kept to a minimum by the fast-moving water. Remember to keep the water level topped off, because the moving water is what prevents ice from forming a solid surface over the pond. If the pond is allowed to freeze over, the harmful gasses from the decomposing plants would put your fish at risk. However, during very cold times your water garden will still need to be checked regularly for damning around the falls and stream. You don't need to worry about your fish because they go down to the bottom of the pond to hibernate during winter. Or you may choose to shut the pond down for the winter. Just disconnect the pump and place it in a bucket of water for storage. Bubblers or heaters are then available to keep the pond from completely freezing over. Once spring arrives, the fish will become more active and the plants will begin to grow. It may take a little time for everything to “wake up.” But once the weather warms up, you will naturally be drawn to spending more and more time outside as your friends and family gather to enjoy the focal point of your garden! Summer is the time you receive the most benefits from your pond, and when you spend the most time there. Your pond creates a paradise of stress relief, a relaxation spot, a place to unwind and let the cooling effect of the water wash over you, and your private vacation home right in your own back yard. Just listening to the soothing splash of water running over a waterfall or watching your fish dart around the rocks or the sunlight dancing on the water is pure nectar for the spirit. You might even find that you've turned off the TV to spend time by your pond. Or perhaps you'd prefer to invite friends over for a barbecue so they, too, can enjoy your pond. No matter why you choose to spend your time by the water, a well-designed and installed water garden will give you endless hours of delight in your own backyard. No excuses are necessary for spending time by your pond! No matter whether it's spring, summer, fall, or winter, the first thing your friends and family want to see is your pond!
